National Quality Awards Designate Top Honors

October 9, 2000

Taiwan's prestigious National Quality Awards were handed out October 5, 2000 at a ceremony in Taipei. Organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, it was the 11th staging of the event. This year President Chen Shui-bian attended the ceremony, making it the first time a president of Taiwan has made an appearance at the event.

A total of seven awards were presented in three major categories: two for large corporations, two for small- and medium-sized enterprises and three for individuals. Judging criteria encompassed a wide range of elements, including company goals and strategy, business operations and organization, information management and application, R&D, customer service, quality assurance guarantees, social responsibility and total quality management (TQM) results.

In the large corporations category, Cheng Shin Rubber Ind. Co., Ltd., a leading Taiwan maker of tires for automobiles, bicycles and other vehicles, came out tops, along with Chunghwa Picture Tubes, Ltd. In the small- and medium-sized enterprise category the winners were Taiyi Printing Enterprise Co., a label printing firm, and Abocom Systems, Inc., a maker of LCD modules and PCMCIA cards. Of the three individuals presented with the award, two are medical administrators, and one is a professor of quality control.

The selection of National Quality Award winners involves a specialized panel of judges and a thorough review process for each candidate, starting with an evaluation of written applications and including site visits by judges. The Industrial Development Bureau, under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, chooses the judges, incorporating a variety of professional individuals from government, industrial and academic backgrounds. This year thirty-nine adjudicators were assigned to the large corporation and small- and medium-sized enterprise categories, while seven decided the individual awards.
